In the center of Brazilian's territory is one of the most originals cities of the world, Brasilia. It's created by Lúcio Costa architect and inaugurated in 1960, the federal capital is one of the few modernist urban projects that get rid of the small planks to become reality. It has a bird format in which the body and big open wings are two large perpendicular shafts.
On Brasilia is located Brazilian federal department and political power. The main departments of executive power, legislature and judiciary occupies buildings designed by architects of international renown, among them is Oscar Niemeyer. This combination of plain city, which shows off real art handiworks from modern architecture exposed in large spaces, gives to the city a unique scenery of the world.
At Eixo Monumental (Monumental Shaft), the large avenue forms a bird body and houses Praça dos Três Poderes (Três Poderes Public Square), Esplanada dos Ministérios, the Cathedral, museums and monuments. The wings shaft, formed by several parallels roads, houses residential Super-Quadras and commerce and services sectors. At peninsulas that go in Paranoá artificial lagoon, are located residential sectors, big houses and embassies.
Although lines, which compose the original city plane, have been preserved, administrative demands and population growth require urbanistic changes. Many appendages were incorporated to main buildings. Even with the existence of viaducts that eliminates streets and avenues crossroads, the increasing of vehicles traffic obligated signals installation to control it in some city points.
But Brasilia isn't only a bold architecture great exposition, which gave to the city the title of Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by Unesco. The buildings are included in immense gardens and there are parks, such as Parque da Cidade (City Park) and Parque Nacional de Brasília (Brasilia National Park). It has a lot of museums and theaters. Its restaurants, offering since Brazilian regional dishes to the international high-level dishes, are the best on the country. The nightlife has complete and animated bars. Establishments with high international pattern are part of the large number of hotels.
Praça dos Três Poderes
Praça dos Três Poderes houses some of most significance buildings of Oscar Niemeyer handiworks - Palácio do Planalto (base of the Republic President), Congresso Nacional (Câmara dos Deputados and Senado Federal), and Supremo Tribunal Federal. Over there are located Museu da Cidade, Panteão da Pátria, and Espaço Lúcio Costa and three sculptures - Pombal (Niemeyer), A Justiça (Alfredo Ceschiatti) and Os Candangos (Bruno Giorgi). Ministério da Justiça and Palácio do Itamaraty (Ministério das Relações Exteriores) are located near and make part of Esplanada dos Ministérios. It is possible to visit inside the buildings at predetermined times.
Other Niemeyer's handiworks
Palácio da Alvorada is the official residence of Republic President. In the middle of the enormous garden, is located the building known by its white marble columns that became Brasilia symbol. It was the great building constructed on the city. 16 curve pillars mixed with stained-glass windows constitute Catedral Metropolitana, of circle format. Around the church can be seen sculptures of Alfredo Ceschiatti - the four evangelists - and inside - suspended angels. There are also paintings of Di Cavalcanti showing the passion's steps. Don't miss the chance of visiting the Memorial JK (JK's Memorial), the Memorial dos Povos Indígenas (Indian People Memorial), with exhibitions od Brazilian tribes and the Teatro Nacional (National Theater).
Torre de Televisão (Television Tower)
With 224 meters high, visiting this place is mandatory. It's possible to see part of the Plano Piloto (Pilot Plan), from a platform 75 meters high. On evenings, many visitants climb up the tower to admire Brasilia's wonderful sunset. Over there is also located Museu Nacional de Gemas, with Brazilian stone exhibitions. On the square where it is the tower there's a craftwork street market.
Museums
Museu de Valores, at Banco Central building has an important bill and coin collection. At Memorial JK is the grave and objects of the Republic ex-president and Brasilia's founder Juscelino Kubitscheck. Catetinho was JK's residence during the city building.
